Brief History of the Tijuana Hot Dog
a.k.a. Bacon Wrapped Hot Dog
The history of this urban culinary delight is as varied and colorful as Mexican itself. Depending on who you ask, or which site you reference, the story changes. I guess that's what makes the story so interesting.
One version of the story goes like this: The hot dog first appeared at the Plaza Mexico City bull ring in 1943, when a couple of American entrepreneurs purchased a concession stand to bring the American classic to Mexico. They figured if it was popular at American baseball games, then it should be a hit at bull fights too. The hot dog with all it's "fixins" appeared later in 1956 at a cart in Mexico City's Parque de la Alameda, which began serving bacon-wrapped hot dogs. The employees of the newly-constructed Torre Latinoamericana (Latin American Tower), then the fourth highest building in the world, would enjoy the bacon wrapped hot dogs. I'm not sure if this version is true, but it sure is fun to think about.
Today you will see hot dogs all over Mexico, with a variety of toppings and names. Here in San Diego, which is just miles north of the Mexico border and a neighbor to Tijuana, we call it the Tijuana Hot Dog or the TJ Dog, and less commonly the Street Dog, Dangerous Dog, or the Dirty Dog. Tourists and revelers alike still enjoy this Mexican classic at carts all around Tijuana and other cities and pueblos in Mexico. ¡PROVECHO!
